Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Reviews
Samsung has formalized its new high-end smartphone and flag carrier for this year 2018. Here is the new Galaxy S9 and its declination XL, the S9 +. As you say right now, the new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 + continue the Galaxy Note 8 and appear as an evolution of the Galaxy S8.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S9 +
- The quality of photos
- The design, still impressive
- The good power of the device
- Highly customizable interface
- The high price at launch
- Very average autonomy
- The opening at F / 1.5, rather gadget
The Galaxy S9 + is not a bad guy. It is an excellent smartphone, particularly effective for the photo and with a very good quality design. However, it leaves as a taste of déjà-vu, too close to the Galaxy S8 + last year, with a particularly high price. Still, for the photo, especially in low light Samsung’s new smartphone plays in the courtyard of – very – big.
5 reasons to crack (or not) for the Samsung Galaxy S9 +
That’s saying that the new Galaxy S9 looks like the S8 unveiled in March of last year . We find all the markers in the S range of Samsung with an 18.5: 9 borderless screen, rounded corners and a good grip. Last year, the design of the Galaxy S8 we had clearly blown away by this ubiquitous screen front. This year, however, most manufacturers offer 18: 9 screen smartphones and Samsung will have to make more than just an update to keep it one step ahead.
Yes for his excellent camera
In addition to the issues of format and battery, it is indeed in the camera that lies the main contribution of the Galaxy S9 + compared to the classic version. For the first time on the Galaxy S range , Samsung has indeed integrated a dual rear photo sensor , able to perform x2 zoom in equivalent 52 mm with an aperture of f / 2.4. In addition, the main camera of the smartphone, equivalent to 26 mm, can modulate the focal opening. Automatically, a ring passes on the sensor to go from f / 2.4 to a record opening on a smartphone of f / 1.5 . If this larger aperture is automatic below 100 lumens, it can also be changed manually using pro mode.
When launching the Galaxy S9 + photo application , we find ourselves facing the unknown. Samsung has completely redesigned its interface, now much closer to what is found on the iPhone. To switch from one mode to another, just slide your finger to the left or right of the screen. Of course there is an automatic mode and a pro mode, but also a “power” mode, more energy efficient, a panorama mode, a direct focus mode, for portraits with background blur, a super mode -Realized to capture sequences at 960 frames per second in 720p, an emoji mode in augmented reality and a hyperlapse mode.
In fact, it is really thanks to its software processing , and not its mechanical opening, that the Galaxy S9 + manages to be particularly effective in low light, even at night. In fact, the camera will capture multiple shots at the same time to analyze the different images and filter the digital noise . The result is particularly effective shots, even in the middle of the night as can be seen above. The clichés, if they are blurred especially in the details, still make it possible to distinguish the forms, including the branches of the tree and the clouds in the sky, even though they were hardly visible with the naked eye. Rarely have we seen smartphone as effective as the Galaxy S9 + in low light.
Yes for its design, always unequaled
Last year, Samsung hit a big blow with its Galaxy S8 and S8 + . It was then smartphones with particularly thin edges, especially because of the curved screen of smartphones. This year, the Galaxy S9 + takes the same recipe, but goes even further.
In use however, the Samsung Galaxy S9 + is rather comfortable to take in hand, including in one-handed use. It will greatly appreciate the location of the fingerprint reader which, not content to be more accessible to the fingers, located lower on the back of the smartphone, is also no longer confused with the photo objectives at the back.
No for its average autonomy
In addition to the dual photo sensor and the size of the screen, the other difference between the Galaxy S9 and S9 + lies in its battery and RAM. If the Samsung Galaxy S9 has 4 GB of RAM, the S9 + goes up to 6 GB . The same goes for the battery, 3000 mAh for the small format, against 3200 mAh for the large model.
Of course, in use the performance of the Galaxy S9 + are particularly optimized and there is no slowdown in everyday life. It is a very high-end smartphone, with a Samsung Exynos 9810 chip . The two new smartphones from the manufacturer are the first to benefit from this new processor.
In order to evaluate its performance, especially in relation to the competition, we submitted the Galaxy S9 + to two benchmark tests, Geekbench 4 and Slingshot Extreme on 3DMark . If the first will measure the gross computing power of the smartphone, the second will focus on the graphics performance, particularly useful for 3D games. In both cases, the higher the score, the better the smartphone.
Yes for its highly customizable system
It is definitely one of the key words of the new S9 and S9 +. They largely repeat what made the success of their predecessors. Logically, the new smartphones from Samsung take over the Samsung Experience overlay . Once the smartphone is turned on, we end up with a highly customizable interface , that is the order of the navigation keys, with the possibility of reversing the location of the buttons back and multitasking, the presence of an application drawer or a very large number of options in the settings menu.
Finally, we note that the Galaxy S9 Plus runs under version 8.0 of Android . Although it is not Oreo 8.1, we can find some of the interesting features of the Google system as the context menu when you press a long time on an application icon. Last but not least, the always on mode of the screen that stays on permanently, thanks to the technology Amoled, while allowing certain interactions like the control of the music.
No because additions to the S8 + are minor
Unlike the iPhone, Samsung’s smartphones tend to see their price fall very quickly after their release. A year after the arrival of the Galaxy S8 Plus, it is now available at 650 euros , while the Galaxy S8 in classic version can be found at 500 euros . The price of both models has therefore almost halved, not in a year, but in a few months, these price decreases are generally seen around six months after the release of Samsung’s high-end smartphones. Therefore, given the particularly close technical data sheets between the S9 + and its predecessor, the S8 +, the question arises: should we look at the S9 +rather than the model of last year?
Finally, the only point on which the Galaxy S9 + can make a real change is on the side of the photo . In particular, the low-light performance is bluffing, even compared to last year’s Galaxy S8 +, thanks to digital noise cancellation. If the focal opening modulable seems to be an interesting point, it provides little use on such a small sensor. However, the dual photo sensor is also welcome on a Samsung Galaxy S device.
