The well-known physicist Stephen Hawking died at the age of 76. That is what his family shares with him on Wednesday. Hawking suffered ALS.

“Professor Hawking died peacefully at home in Cambridge early in the morning,” he says in a press release that his family spread early Wednesday morning.

“We are deeply sad that our beloved father has passed away today,” say his children Lucy, Robert and Tim.

“He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years to come. His courage and perseverance, along with his genius and humor, inspired people around the world. He once said: “The universe would be nothing if it were not the home of the people you love.” We will miss him forever. “
