Mobile World Congress 2019: The 5 most anticipated novelties
The Mobile World Congress (MWC19) returns to Barcelona from February 25 to 28 to show advances in mobile connectivity and how it, by becoming smarter, creates a space with more and better services for both citizens and companies. In this scenario 5G networks , the Internet of things , artificial intelligence and intelligent platforms are combined . This year will not only be promises, since technology lovers will be able to attend more than 100 interactive demonstrations and access practical experiences that will allow us to understand how these innovations affect practically all aspects of our lives in the areas of entertainment, industry, transportation, public services and the environment.
As for devices, the novelties point to two major areas: folding equipment and terminals with the capacity to be compatible with 5G networks. In more than one case the new devices will have both innovations integrated.
These are the five most anticipated developments of the congress.
1. New ‘smartphones’ folding and with 5G
There are several companies that will show their new folding devices in the MWC, which will show the long journey made by this type of products since 1973, when Motorola showed the first of those bulky devices that some seasoned analyst condemned to failure .
The companies Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, ZTE and Nubia will be the first to announce folding mobile phones. Probably not the only ones as some have managed to keep their news safe from leaks. Note that some of these new products, in addition to plagues, will be compatible with the new and fast 5G networks.
Samsung will release its Galaxy F (or X) model this week , which, according to rumors, could have a folding screen of 7.4 inches and a resolution of 1,536 x 2,152 pixels. The device would have another external screen of 4.6 inches. A price of about 1,600 euros has been filmed, but this is an unconfirmed data. What is known with certainty is that the expected Galaxy S10 will arrive in the market , in several versions of size, the continuity of the S9 currently in the market.
Huawei has not denied – although he has not given details – of the launching in the MWC of his first smartphone with capacity to use the 5G network that will have a folding screen and whose price will be above 1,100 euros. The second Huawei brand, Honor , will announce the latest news in its catalog as well as the new Honor Watch Magic , its new Honor Band 4 and wireless headphones.
It has not transcended much of Oppo and Xiaomi , the signatures of Chinese origin that will bring (probably) other mobile folding to the market. On the contrary, the Chinese girl Nubia has also encouraged the filtering of a folding model for the wrist called Nubia Alpha and that among other features allows video calls and seflies, in addition to having a wireless charging mode. As a smartwatch, it includes functions for monitoring physical activities, music player and probably 5G connectivity.
The last great novelty in this field will be the presentation of a 5G p rototype by the influential OnePlus brand that will be released this year.
2. New mobile ranges
There will be a lot of life beyond the flexible panels and the 5G, the Nokiafirm has announced a wide portfolio of new products, without offering more details, but it has leaked to the press its spectacular Nokia 9 PureView a model that has five sensors that They would be accompanied by an LED flas . It will be a model without ‘notch’ and with fingerprint sensor on the screen.
Sony on the other hand will bring to the MWC its Xperia XZ4 of which some analysts expect a 6.5-inch screen with a 21: 9 aspect. It is given for sure that we will see a device with three cameras in the back.
Another expected model will be the LG G8 ThinQ with three cameras in the back with facial recognition by biometric authentication thanks to a front camera with 3D sensor. The system is based on a REAL3 sensor from Infineon, capable of detecting the depth of objects with the help of a laser, which will allow to identify the face even in very poor light conditions. Also highlight its 6.1-inch OLED panel and here is the great novelty will integrate the technology developed by LG so that its entire surface acts as a kind of speaker diaphragm. This is the new Crystal Sound OLED technology in which the entire surface of the screen vibrates to achieve better sound performance.
If at the beginning we mentioned the example of the Motorola of 1973, mention that it is expected that this brand (now owned by Lenovo) is encouraged to give new life to the legendary model Motorola Razr, presenting a mobile phone with a folding screen .
3. Mobility of the future
As is known the MWC are mobile, and some important technologies more. This year we will see use cases related to the mobility of the future. Spaces such as the Mobility Lab located in the Parcolotor Castellolí-Barcelona circuit will be a test bed for the development of the connected and autonomous vehicle. Connectivity solutions are also presented in the urban environment, for communications between vehicles and street furniture (such as traffic lights) or communications between emergency vehicles and other vehicles.
Seat will also present an urban electric vehicle at the Mobile World Congress, and will test three cases of use of the connected vehicle together with Telefónica.
4. Internet of things
Another use case that can be seen will be the one that Cellnex, Sitepy Masmóvil are working on within the framework of the 5G Barcelona initiative, called 5G Fire Fighting Drone Project for the management of geo-localized information in real time through drones and dedicated networks for the extinction of fires.
Among the new projects of the Internet of Things (IoT) will be solutions for social housing or control and real-time monitoring of all types of goods, which will put on the track of intelligent transport and new trends in international trade.
5. 5G networks and new services
In contrast to the current 4G and LTE networks , the 5G will mean an increase in download speeds of up to 500%; On the other hand, the bandwidth is greater, which means consuming content without delays and without saturation problems. If we attend to practical questions, that means that inside the house, although there are several simultaneous connections with different devices or systems, there would be no reduction in speed.
The priority is that these new networks will improve the experience and services of online commerce; the capacity of virtual assistants; as well as leisure, since ultra high definition, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality ( VR) videos and immersive TV will be accessible at any time and place , as well as a large number of digital services, including control of health and fitness. In this sense you can see how the Hospital Clínic worksof Barcelona that has inaugurated the first operating room equipped with 5G connectivity, which will allow a specialist surgeon to guide in real time, without being physically present, another surgeon who is operating anywhere in the world. The low latency of communications with 5G makes it possible for the images of the intervention to be transmitted without delays or interruptions, which represents a great improvement over the current telemedicine.
You can also see examples of intelligent traffic control systems that will tell vehicles when to slow down and when to accelerate, eliminating the need for traffic lights and speed cameras in the future.
