what is a cyber security professional ?
The term “security” is quite fashionable, and nowadays, it is used in all sauces because it is much more seller. Suddenly the trades of the system administration or network are also becoming security professions .
The term “systems, network and database administrator” is gradually being replaced by the title of “systems and security administrator”. In short, as soon as you enter the computer trades, you are already integrating cybersecurity trades. Because yes, even the helpdesk technician will have to be a messenger of the good word “Security”.
Now, everything is not so simple, and in the computer trades, one important thing is to specialize !
If you choose to specialize in security! Then you will also have to think about specializing in your specialty! Finally, leave you open to the even larger field of information systems.
I lost you?
My advice is to start by defining your profile.
- Are you more attracted to the technique , or do you prefer the organization ?
- Do you prefer to build an infrastructure ?
- Do you prefer to develop software ?
- Do you prefer to hack ?
- Or manage a service or advise companies?
This is what will define (in my opinion) the axes to follow to reach your goal.
I will not reinvent the job descriptions that can be found on the internet, but to help you, here are some examples of trades to do more research:
- Security Administrator
- Security Engineer
- RCMP Occupations (Governance, Risks and Compliance)
- Consulting professions (consultants)
- SOC Analyst
- DPO (Data Protection Officer)
Let’s focus now on how to get there !
Diploma or Title?
It depends primarily on your current background, abilities, and context.
The diplomas from general education are delivered by the Ministry of Education and you will acquire transverse skills, and a methodology (see a way of thinking) that will serve you the rest of your career.
You will be able, normally to quickly understand any new system and adapt quickly to new technologies.
This is the path that will surely open the doors for you, especially for large companies via the grandes écoles, or the renowned engineering schools.
The titles issued by engineering schools entitled to the commission of the titles of engineer (CTI) are a little apart. These schools issue degrees, recognized as engineering diplomas, generally at the same social level as national diplomas (LMD – Bachelor – Master – Doctorate) at the equivalent level of study.
The titles will allow you to be operational , directly in a given profession or on a particular technology. They are delivered by private schools, or engineering schools.
The titles, like the diplomas, go in level equivalences from the bac to BAC +5.
Many private schools offer courses leading to titles. To frame all this, the Ministry of Labor awards to certain schools, on request, subject to verifiable results on the labor market, a registration of the titles to a national directory proving the quality of the training.
This is the RNCP title .
These courses are generally done through alternation or professionalization, which has the advantage of offering you a fast field experience, which often leads to a job.
This is interesting for a self-taught, having already failed to position himself for lack of a diploma, or for someone who wants to retrain.
Schools still require a level of equivalence to access the different stages of training. This is why some schools offer complete courses ranging from bac, to bac +5 via RNCP titles, allowing a field approach from the bottom of the scale.
Some schools can make you enter higher courses through tests, if you have a level of equivalence, see you offer a VAE (Validation of experience acquired).
Today, for example, the “OpenClassRooms” site makes it possible to obtain RNCP titles with totally remote courses.
The advantage of these is that you can integrate a curriculum at any time of the year
Nevertheless, attention must be paid to the titles of institutions that are not recognized at the RNCP . These titles are intended more for existing employees wishing to maintain their skills through the continuous process.
I’m not talking about school 42, which is more or less “separate” in this ecosystem.
Certifications in the field
Certifications are especially interesting to differentiate yourself from others with the same profile, but do not replace a title, let alone a diploma. They will especially differentiate you during a job search, or to position you with a client.
Indeed, with equal competence, a certified person will certainly offer more confidence to the recruiter or the client. A certification will also bring more confidence on the control of a subject to the person who holds it
Some RNCP training centers include certifications throughout their course, in line with the curriculum, which can be very interesting.
And Cyber Security courses in all this?
I do not know all the courses, but you can find different trainings via your favorite search engine, or more generally via internet.
To my knowledge, the courses begin at the level of license with for example the pro license CDAISI, training at Pentest at the IUT of Valenciennes.
You can also see engineering schools such as CESI or integrate a CNAM engineering cycle.
I can especially talk to you about the digital Security Expert course, where you can browse all categories of Cybersecurity, from offensive security to SSI management, while going through the Forensic.
Do not hesitate to indicate the diplomas and schools you know, with the cities in comment to help the greatest number and discuss between students
