It is a nightmare for almost everyone. You try to take photos from a memory card but the images are gone. Even with a human error, you can quickly lose a lot of files. What now? Time for Recuva! With that tool, you can still retrieve your deleted photos.
Step 1: Recuva
If you have lost your photos, it is important to keep your head cool. Chances are that you can get the images back with Recuva. Here is one important game rule: do not use the memory card until you have lost what you have lost. Download and install the free version of Recuva. The paid Pro version has more options, but usually, the free version offers enough tools to get your files back. Recuva can handle all types of media: memory card, hard disk, and USB sticks.
Step 2: What are you looking for?
As soon as you start Recuva, the program displays a wizard. If the wizard is not in Dutch, click Cancel. Change the language via Options / General / Language / English. Close Recuva and restart the program.
Go through the wizard by answering simple questions. Choose which type of file you have lost, for example, Images. Indicate where the images should be. Known locations can be found in the list, such as On my media card, In my documents or In the trash. With the option A specific location you can indicate where Recuva should search, for example on your D-drive.
Step 3: Comprehensive Scan
You also get the option Enable Extended Scanning. Leave this option off for a while. First try to retrieve your files with a quick check. Finally not found what you were looking for? Restart Recuva and run the extended scan option. You can select and save the found files. It is important that you choose a different medium. Are you looking for a memory card? Never store the recovered files on the memory card itself, but for example on your C-drive. Did you lose your files on your computer? Save the recovered files on a USB stick or external drive.
Advanced users can skip the wizard with the Cancel or Cancel button. In the basic screen of Recuva you will see a drop-down menu to the left of the Scan button. Click on this and select the medium you want to search for missing files.
Never store the files found in the medium where they have been ‘lost.’
